Gulfstream Park, a casino and race track in Florida, has joined the fight against a proposed Indian gambling compact. Gulfstream argues that their future would be in jeopardy if the compact is passed. The attorneys for the Park have filed a motion and say that the racing industry and taxpayers will be in a bad way if the agreement is approved.

The Park has said that themselves and other horse-related industries bring $3 billion to Florida’s economy and also provide the state with numerous jobs. The motion also states that jobs, property taxes and state taxes could be lost if the tribe gains rights to operated blackjack and other games.

"In terms of direct fees and taxes to government, Gulfstream Park pays more than $30 million to state and local governments annually," attorney Cynthia S. Tunnicliff wrote. "This economic impact, these jobs and the consequential tax revenues are all jeopardized by the governor's actions in executing this compact."

Early in November, an agreement was reached with the Seminole tribe that would allow them to host blackjack, baccarat and high stakes slot machines in return for a guaranteed $375 million over the first three years of the agreement. The agreement would have a 25 year pact. Critics of the agreement say that there are loop holes where the tribe could reduce their payments or stop paying altogether.

The state House filed last week that Legislature must approve all compacts. Both the House and Gulfstream argue that the compact impacts on the Legislature’s sole right to make law. If the judges agree with this statement then the compact will move to Legislature or will be voided.
